Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) for Skincare – Everything You Need to Know

Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) injections are becoming increasingly popular for skincare. It is known to treat acne, scars, surgical scars, hyperpigmentation, uneven and dull skin tone, fine lines, and wrinkles. This treatment uses a patient’s own blood cells to accelerate healing in a specific area. It’s a very interesting procedure, and there is a lot to know about it.

At Sabrina Medical Aesthetics, our head injector Sabrina has over 15 years of experience in the health care sector. Currently, at her Vaughan Medical Spa, she performs many aesthetician treatments daily, including PRP for skin.

In this blog, we discuss everything you need to know about Platelet-Rich-Plasma for Skincare and if this treatment is right for you.

“My mission is to provide you with natural, youthful results without looking overly done, swollen or fake. Together we can gently improve signs of aging and get you the soft, natural looking and long-lasting results you’re after.”

What is PRP?

Plasma is a component of your blood that contains special proteins that help your blood to clot. It also contains proteins that support cell growth.

According to Healthline, researchers have produced PRP by isolating plasma from blood and concentrating it. By injecting PRP into damaged tissues, it stimulates your body to grow new, healthy cells and promote healing. Since the tissue growth factors are more concentrated in prepared growth injections, researchers say that the body tissues can heal quicker.

What will PRP do for my skin?

This non-surgical procedure can be used to treat acne scars, surgical scars, hyperpigmentation, uneven and dull skin tone, fine lines, and wrinkles. Because plasma is a component of blood and is full of healing and growth factors, when PRP is introduced back into the skin, the growth factors help stimulate collagen-producing cells and new blood vessel formation. This results in fresh, rejuvenated, and glowing skin.

What are the benefits of PRP?

PRP has many amazing benefits. It will help brighten and smooth your skin tone, help restore lost volume, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. After PRP, there is no downtime needed.

Since this is your own plasma that is used for the procedure, it is safe with a very small chance of any negative reactions to the plasma. It is a good procedure for anyone who is worried about injecting any foreign substances in their body.

Is PRP safe?

The procedure is safe, as it is only your plasma that is being infused back into your skin.

It’s important to find a service provider that knows how to handle the blood using the correct steps and materials, like Sabrina Medical Aesthetics.

Are you a good candidate for PRP therapy?

This treatment is good for all skin types, light or dark. We recommend it for those that are interested in improving their skin quality and smooth fine lines on their face, hands, and neck. Patients with dark under eye circles also benefit from this, as they will experience an improvement in puffiness, darkness and skin quality under the eyes.

With PRP, your skin will appear more youthful, tighter and will have a glow. This is a great way to get a natural improvement to your appearance.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have Hepatitis C, HIV or AIDS, any type of blood cancer or skin cancer or cardiovascular disease (due to blood thinners), we do not recommend PRP.

What is the process of PRP?

The process begins with blood being taken from the patient. Then, it is centrifuged to separate out the plasma. Followed by this, the plasma is injected into the skin by your service provider. This injection is used to penetrate the skin and bring your plasma (repair cells) into the dermis to promote repair.

The treatment takes about an hour or less.

How many PRP treatments are recommended to see results?

To see results, we recommend getting three to four sessions, while doing them in an interval of four to six weeks. Once these treatments are finished, some patients could come in for “maintenance” therapy once a year. Patients that smoke or have excessive sun damage will require more treatments than average.

Are there any side effects of a PRP treatment?

There are typically no major side effects of a PRP treatment, due to your own plasma being used. Some reactions that patients can experience are irritation, pain, or bleeding in the injection area. The most common reaction is post-injection swelling, which only lasts a few hours.

Can I do any other treatments at the same time?

You cannot do any facials, lasers, Botox or dermal filler treatments for one week before and one week after PRP treatments.

How long do I have to wait until I return to normal activities?

Since PRP treatments do not require much downtime, we recommend waiting only 24 hours after a treatment, before resuming regular activities.

Do I need to be aware of anything else as I prepare for a PRP treatment?

It’s important to let your service provider know if you’ve had any cold sores on the skin or lips, as this viral infection can be reactivated in these areas, when doing injection treatments.

Your injector may provide you with antiviral medication in this case.
