Give Your Skin a Desirable Glow and Healthy Boost with Microneedling

We all desire beautiful, radiant skin and many of us are constantly on the lookout for new methods and practices to help us attain it. Microneedling has been around for centuries but has recently become one of the most popular trending procedures in skincare and anti-aging. With its endless list of benefits, Sabrina Medical Aesthetics is proud to offer microneedling to give clients that glowing, healthy skin of their dreams.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that involves a dermaroller pricking the skin on your face with tiny needles. The small wounds caused by the needles then activate collagen production in the body and promote the production of elastin for smoother and firmer skin.

What are its benefits?

There are numerous benefits of microneedling that ultimately all help skin look younger and healthier.

Microneedling improves:

  • Acne and scarring
  • Large pores
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Loose skin
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretch marks

The overall result of microneedling is improved skin health, evenness in tone and colour, smoothness, and firmness.

What is the procedure for microneedling therapy?

The procedure is very quick and typically takes between 20 to 30 minutes. Treatment will start with a numbing cream spread over your skin to prevent discomfort, and then the aesthetician moves around a sterilized dermaroller with minuscule needles evenly across your face. Pinpricks from the needles will cause tiny injuries to your skin and which can lead it to bleed. You can soothe your skin afterwards with a cream or serum.

Does it hurt?

Due to the effects of the numbing cream, the procedure only causes mild discomfort. Once the numbing wears off, you may experience a feeling similar to a sunburn on your face for the first few days.

Is it safe?

Microneedling is a safe procedure when done by a medical professional like Sabrina at her Vaughan Medical Spa. The most common side effect of this treatment is minimal skin irritation and redness immediately after therapy, as well as mild bleeding and bruising from the open wounds. While complications are rare, just like any other cosmetic procedure, it can carry some risks. These include an allergic reaction to any cream or serum used and/or infection if skin cleanliness is not properly maintained. To mitigate any undesired effects, avoid going to places that increase the risk of infection such as swimming pools, lakes, rivers, oceans, and avoid using harsh soaps and creams that may irritate the skin.

What is the recovery time?

Microneedling is a non-invasive procedure, and as a result recovery time is very short and most patients require little to no downtime and can resume regular activities immediately. However, depending on how deeply the needle pierces your skin, it may take your skin anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to fully heal. The most noticeable result of microneedling directly after treatment is skin inflammation but it typically goes down within the first few hours. Redness and swelling may also remain for up to 48 hours after the procedure.

Can I apply makeup or creams on my skin after my treatment?

After your treatment, your skin will have open wounds and therefore feel more sensitive. To protect your raw skin, it is best to avoid the sun and apply sunscreen for two weeks. Mild creams such as moisturizers can be used so long as they do not irritate your skin. It is also important to avoid wearing any non-mineral makeup on your face for at least 24 hours after the procedure and to avoid applying makeup with dirty or old makeup brushes, as doing so can increase the likelihood of infection.

When will I see results/how many sessions are needed?

After a session, your skin will be noticeably smoother and more radiant within one to two weeks. These benefits will last for a few months post-treatment. Every patient’s skin is unique and therefore the number of treatments necessary for the best results can vary. However, many patients require three to six sessions to see optimal results and microneedling sessions can be repeated every four to six weeks.

Why not just do it myself?

Home rollers and home microneedling kits are becoming an increasingly popular tool as they are ultimately cheaper than professionally-done microneedling and thought to be simple to use. Unfortunately, these do-it-yourself tools aren’t nearly as effective as the ones used by a medical provider because these rollers’ needles are significantly shorter and duller. Resultantly, these rollers hardly puncture the skin and professional-grade results are not achievable. Further, home rollers are less hygienic and carry an increased risk of irritating your skin and causing an infection because it is more difficult to ensure the reusable tool is disinfected and germ-free with each use.

If you are looking for more intense and long-term results, microneedling by a licensed professional such as Sabrina is a safe option.

Am I a good candidate for microneedling?

This treatment is suitable for all patients of all skin tones. If you are looking for a non-invasive treatment to help minimize acne scarring, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, or simply looking to boost the health and appearance of your skin, microneedling is a good option for you. However, if you have an ongoing skin infection, the infection would require treatment prior to the scheduled appointment day. As well, this procedure can’t be performed on anyone on acne medication or women who are pregnant.
